For our second concert in the series we have a lovely treat in store to celebrate the New Year. We will be joined by Drogheda based pianist and composer Bríd Dunne with fiddle player and composer Edel Sullivan. They will perform their compositions together, as well as some traditional Irish material. Our local food producer will be Maria Flynn (Ballymakenny Farm) with heritage potatoes.
From Cork City, Ireland, Edel originally studied classical violin at the CIT Cork School of Music and Anglia University, Cambridge, U.K.
From her teenage years she began exploring the use of the instrument in a wide range of genres from rock to folk. She has performed, composed, recorded and taught extensively, particularly in the Irish traditional style with gigs on the international folk festival circuit, to accompanying singer-songwriter Ger Wolfe, to appearing in Michael Flately’s show ‘Lord of the Dance’.
An avid tune writer and arranger in the Irish traditional style her debut solo fiddle album, ‘In The Time Of’ was described as:
“….the best traditional album I’ve heard all year…..she manages to blend a smooth sweetness of tone with life, swing and spot-on rhythm. It’s as a composer and arranger that she really stands out, though.”– Sarah McQuaid, Hot Press
“Spellbinding.” – Siobhan Long, The Irish Times
“….In The Time Of is a rarity to be championed.” – Earle Hitchner (Irish Echo, New York)
‘The most astonishingly beautiful recording I’ve heard in years.’ (Sing Out! U.S.)
Bríd Dunne is originally from Drogheda where she teaches and composes. She grew up surrounded by classical and traditional Irish music. She is classically trained and holds a Dip ABRSM and BA in Music and Spanish from UCD.
After studying in the Cork School of Music, Bríd began to experiment with different genres including salsa, especially the teachings of Rebecca Mauleón. Following on from this she experimented with the mix of traditional and latin styles, composing and arranging “Mother’s Delight” and “Louth Samba”. She became the piano player for Galway Salsa bands Calle Latina and Cuba Libre before joining with nine other international musicians to form Baile an Salsa, who she toured, composed, arranged and recorded with for five years. Their performances included the Late, Late Show in Ireland, Folk Alliance, Kansas City, and Philadelphia Folk Fest.
She has toured and recorded with various other artists over the years including Edel Sullivan and Ger Wolfe.
More recent performances include concerts with Lir at Droichead Arts Centre and Gig Rig at Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann’18.
